Early Intervention is the Best Prevention: Child Abuse Prevention Month

At the Missouri Coalition for Children (MCC), we know that preventing child abuse begins long before a crisis occurs. It starts with connected communities and early investments in the well-being of children. Communities across the country recognize April as Child Abuse Prevention Month – a time to raise awareness and take action to protect children and support families.

Community care is child abuse prevention. It looks like wraparound supports for families, safe places for youth to turn to, and trusted professionals walking alongside caregivers through the challenges they face. Early interventions are the most effective prevention strategies we have. According to a comprehensive analysis published in the journal Child Abuse & Neglect, participation in early childhood intervention programs led to a 31% reduction in the rate of child maltreatment. MCC and our member agencies are committed to building a future where all Missouri children can grow up safe and supported.

These three MCC member organizations are doing powerful prevention work in Missouri; read on to get to know what child abuse prevention means to them.

Child Abuse Prevention Association (CAPA)

Located in Jackson County, CAPA strengthens families through trauma-informed therapy, home visitation and parenting education. Their prevention services are rooted in the belief that when caregivers have the tools and support they need, children are safer and families are stronger. From healing after trauma to learning new parenting strategies, CAPA’s work equips families with skills to thrive.

MBCH Martin Youth Drop-in Center

Operated by Missouri Baptist Children’s Home (MBCH) in St. Louis, The Martin Youth Drop-in Center provides a critical safety net for youth experiencing homelessness or instability. At the center, youth can access meals, hygiene supplies, emotional support and connections to long-term services. This early, low-barrier support helps prevent abuse while creating a place of belonging. “We will provide a safe space for youth to chill, have a meal, wash their clothes, use of computers, and so much more,” MBCH program director Yolanda Johnson said. As of now, the Martin Youth Drop-in Center is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. with plans to expand as engagement grows.

FosterAdopt Connect

With locations throughout Missouri, FosterAdopt Connect provides a range of services designed to keep children safe. Their prevention efforts include behavioral health support, kinship navigation, concrete resources and innovative programs like Extreme Family Finding. All these services aim to address root causes and keep children in loving, supportive environments. Their work reflects a deep understanding that families need comprehensive, compassionate support to succeed.

Prevention Starts with Us

At Missouri Coalition for Children, we believe that child abuse is preventable and that the heart of prevention lies in investing in people. Our member organizations work across Missouri to ensure children and families have access to the tools, resources and relationships that can help them thrive.

As we honor Child Abuse Prevention Month this April, let’s celebrate the work happening across our state and continue building a Missouri where children are free from harm.
